Johnny Damon and Don Kelly also knocked in a run for the Tigers, who have won four of their last six. Dontrelle Willis (1-1) earned only his second win since joining the Tigers in a trade from Florida on December 5, 2007. The left-hander also added six strikeouts and a pair of walks to his ledger. Jose Valverde came on in the ninth to pick up his seventh save of the season.

Magglio Ordonez picked up his 2,000th career hit with a single in the fourth. He finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Orlando Hudson, Michael Cuddyer, Brendan Harris and Luke Hughes each had a hit for Minnesota, which had won six straight series coming into this one. The Twins have dropped three of four overall.

Carl Pavano (3-2) was the hard-luck loser as the veteran righty pitched a complete game, allowing three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits with a pair of walks and five strikeouts.

Detroit opened the scoring in the first. Jackson led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on Drew Butera's throwing error and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Damon.

Scott Sizemore doubled with one down in the fifth and crossed the plate on Jackson's single to put the Tigers up 2-0.

Willis then worked out of some two-out trouble in the sixth when the left- hander got Jim Thome to fly out to right with runners on first and second. Willis walked Jason Kubel leading off the seventh and was replaced by Joel Zumaya, who got Delmon Young to bounce into a 4-6-3 double play, then retired Harris on a groundout.

Zumaya threw a perfect eighth and Kelly's single in the home half brought in Ordonez, who doubled with two outs. Valverde closed things out with a scoreless ninth.

Twins first baseman Justin Morneau and shortstop J.J. Hardy were given the day off for rest...Joe Mauer did not start, but struck out in a pinch hitting appearance in the eighth and stayed in to catch...The Twins went 12-7 against the Tigers last season, but were just 4-5 in the nine games contested at Comerica Park.
